Grading Update
I have updated everything I am able to grade at this time.  Next week, I will add your portfolio letters and M.C. Final Exam.  While grading, I also noticed that many of you never uploaded your spoken word project to the blog, both preventing your peers from benefiting from your ideas and myself from grading your work.  You need to do so ASAP, as it is currently causing you to receive a 0/120 points.
English 9
Instructor: Ms. Hoppe
English 9A is a required five-credit semester course that fulfills the college and ninth grade graduation requirements for English. The 9th grade course introduces students to various genres of literature with writing exercises linked to the reading selections. Through the benchmark and core assignments, designed to correspond to the California State Content Standards for English/Language Arts, students learn literary analysis skills, with particular emphasis on character development and conflict. Students learn to write expository, analytical essays about literature, to practice the fundamentals of research, and to become more skilled in oral expression.

9th Grade Theme: Man’s Journey to Self Discovery
Literary Focus: It is in life’s conflicts we define who we are and who we want to become.
Essential Question for 9th Grade: How does one find goodness in oneself in a complex society? How do we define our personal values in relation to our duty to self, family, and society? Are those values purely subjective or universal?

Letter to Your English Teacher (for next year)
Write a letter of introduction for your portfolio. Use the Business Letter format.

1) Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself.  How would you describe your personality? In what are you interested? How do you spend your time? What is a typical day like for you?

2) Paragraph 2: Discuss strengths and positive experiences. What activities or assignments have you enjoyed? What are your strengths in English class?

3) Paragraph 3: Acknowledge needs and weaknesses. With what have you struggled? Are there certain types of assignments that are more difficult for you? What can you do to improve this year? What can your teacher do to help you? What other resources do you have to support you?

4) Paragraph 4: Form a Plan.  What are your goals for this new school year?  Set two specific, measurable goals for yourself in regards to English class.

Week 4 Blogging
I've finished grading in orange. Exciting, I know.  Scores are posted in the gradebook.  Those of you waiting until late tonight to turn this in will have to wait for my next grading round as I need to share my attention with my 10th graders. :)
Week 3 Blogging
Week 3 is graded.  For future reference, these rubrics are graded in green.

Week 2, Blog Submission Grading
Week two's blogs, from 4.26-5.2, have been graded in pink.  (Just in case you mix up the rubrics.)
Blogging
Make sure you read over your peers' comments prior to posting your own response.  Comments posted this week that are redundant, and repeat the same ideas already posted by others, will be deleted.

I am also going back through your posts at random and noting errors.  Keep in mind that no one knows who you are, and yet everyone can benefit and grow from seeing these revision recommendations and trying to fix the errors.  Again, I recommend typing your answers in Word first so that you have some assistance with proofreading. :)
